Recording of phone calls?

I would like to know if anyone knows the legality of individuals recording phone calls WITHOUT notifying the caller that they are being recorded . We have an aggressive bill collector that is very rude and demeaning to my wife and would like to catch him so dont want him to know I am recording We live in NH but feel this would probably be federal law any help would be appreaciated
