How far can manipulation go to?

I think generally speaking the skills and charisma of historical figures and fictional characters have been greatly exaggerated. That's not to say those aren't real traits or skills that certain people possess -- but to really convince someone of something they have to be willing to believe it to begin with. If it is so far outside of their belief system, they wont listen to even the sweetest tongue.
