Here's the thing...The BMV/DMV and/or court system would send him a letter indicating he was DWD and they would be able to show this. If your friend did not have a correct address at the time because he moved, that would be his fault as well because it is law that your notify the BMV/DMV of any address change. Secondly, when he was caught the second time, he knew he was DWD. So, why would any person believe that he did not know about it the first time. YOU even said that his license was taken away for driving drunk in 2001!
